July 18, Saturday

Aosta trip. The forecast was for cold, rain part of the day, squalls part of the day so we came prepared. We had breakfast at 6:15, and loaded the bus and the van at 7:00. Still raining. Hard.

Aosta is on the other side of the Alps, and so we drove 2.5 hours, down winding roads, through tunnels. As we looked up the mountains we could see snow falling! Thankfully we when got to Aosta- no rain, no snow, just sun!! So we peeled off some layers and toured the town. Once we got the students orientated- they could explore/shop/eat on their own.

Things to see/do in Aosta-
The Arch of Augustus- erected in 35BC to celebrate the victory of the Roman troops.

The Roman walls and some towers that still stand. (we saw the Tour Fromage)

The Roman Theatre, the southern façade remains today, 22m tall. The seating area is also still there.

The church of Saint Orso. It seemed that they were excavating the cemetary or some burial grounds beside the church.
There is a market- selling clothes, shoes, purses… etc. The students managed to pick up some bargains. (I didn’t! Shocking for those who know me!! –Char)

And some Italian food!! Pizza, pasta and gelato!! YUMMMMM! I think most students had some gelato (italian ice cream.) I certainly did!! The photo of us eating gelato includes us, Joanne, Terri (the teacher in charge of the exchange program) and 2 other teachers who came along, Nomi and Veronica.

We were home by 5:30 and by then, it was just dripping a bit- so no more rain!
